Types of Food Allergies

Food Allergies: Find out If the Symptoms You Are Experiencing Could Be Caused by Something You’re Eating.

Food AllergiesIf you are professed foodie, the last thing you want to think about is that something you are eating could be affecting your health. Of course, there are millions of people in the country dealing with food allergies, from babies to adults. So, what are the most common food allergies and what symptoms warrant a trip to our Utica, NY, allergist Dr. Ludwig Khoury?

Common Food Allergies

Even though just about any food can cause an allergic reaction, there are eight different kinds of foods that most commonly cause allergy symptoms. These foods are:

  • Milk
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Eggs
  • Shellfish
  • Fish
  • Wheat
  • Soy

In some cases, certain seeds (e.g. sesame) can also cause an allergic reaction.

Symptoms of a Food Allergy

Symptoms can manifest in different ways, usually affecting the skin, intestinal tract, or cardiovascular system. Common symptoms include,

  • Stomach cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Hives
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing (Severe)
  • Swelling of the tongue
  • Dizziness
  • Anaphylaxis (this is a life-threatening reaction that affects breathing and sends the body into shock; this requires immediate medical attention)

Symptoms of a food allergy will appear within two hours of consuming the food; however, most symptoms will generally show up within a matter of minutes. Delayed symptoms are rare but are more often seen in children.

Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that just because you are experiencing these symptoms after eating certain foods doesn’t necessarily mean that you have an allergy. If you notice these same symptoms recurring, then it’s a good idea to keep a food journal to pinpoint if there is a specific food that is causing these symptoms.

If you discover that there is a specific, food then it is pertinent to consult with our allergy specialist in Utica, NY, to both figure out if it’s truly an allergy and how to best avoid it in the future.
